SUZANNE AUCOIN: Cancer activist dies
The Canadian Press
November 12, 2007
ST. CATHARINES -- Cancer activist Suzanne Aucoin died early yesterday -- nearly two
weeks after she was admitted to a palliative care centre.
With her two brothers and a close friend at her bedside, Ms. Aucoin, 37, an outspoken
advocate for improved health care for Ontario cancer patients, died at approximately
3 a.m.
Ms. Aucoin, who had colorectal cancer, lobbied the government to provide patients
better access to cancer drugs that are not funded in Ontario. This year Ontario's
Ombudsman blasted the Health Ministry for mishandling Ms. Aucoin's application to get
out-of-country coverage for cancer drugs in the United States.
The ministry agreed to cover a tab of about $76,000 she spent on the cancer drug
Erbitux in New York and Ontario, as well as the legal costs, and announced a review of
its out-of-country coverage program.
