Update March 8, 2006
Hello!! It is late on Tuesday night and I hope I can fall asleep soon. The steroids from
today’s treatment tend to keep me wide awake. Some late night television is on the
agenda…
Anyhow, it was a good and long day at the hospital. My bloodwork looks good and I
feel relatively well after today’s treatment. My doctor informed me that two other
patients of his were approved for erbitux at Roswell Park in Buffalo by OHIP. He has re-
submitted my application for out of country coverage and I should hear back in a
week. I am still confused by the constant inconsistency within OHIP and the Ministry
of Health.
In the meantime, my lawyer has submitted all of the paperwork necessary for my
appeal. We await their response…
I am also pursuing a meeting with my insurance company for funding. It seems Great
West Life will reimburse their clients but GreenShield (my insurance company) is
dragging their heels.
Fundraising is in full gear as I do not expect assistance from the health care
institutions. There will be a spin a thon at Brock University on April 8th. More
information and pledge forms will be on the website shortly.
As well, sign up for the golf tournament soon as spots are filling up. A poster with
more details will be on the website later this week. We are looking for sponsor and
prizes for the golf tournament.
As I write this update I am saddened by the death of Dana Reeve. I have admired her
and Christopher’s strength and courage over the last decade. It is time for
governments in Canada and the United States to financially commit to cancer research
for the less prominent ( I mean the less popular because lung is the number one killer
for women and mean and colon is the third killer for men and women in both
countries) cancers like lung and colon cancer. I am planning on working with fellow
colon cancer patients next month to share information but to move ahead with
advocacy and letting the government know our concerns.
I thank you for checking up on me. I will be taking a break next week and will write an
update in two weeks.
